Same job as the high-profile foundation, four inches shorter. The TEMPUR-Flat Low Profile Foundation is a solid wood-frame platform built to Tempur-Pedic's specification — completely rigid, no flex anywhere across the deck, which is what a TEMPUR mattress requires underneath it.
The 5-inch height exists for one reason: the thicker mattresses in the line. A ProAdapt or a LuxeBreeze is a tall mattress on its own, and putting one on a 9-inch foundation can leave the top of the bed higher than most people want to climb into. Drop the foundation to 5 inches and the finished bed lands back at a normal height. If your mattress is a standard depth, the high profile is usually the better match.
The rule about foundations still applies either way. A TEMPUR mattress on widely spaced slats or an old coil box spring will conform to the gaps rather than to you, and it can affect the warranty. A flat rigid base is not an accessory to this brand — it is part of how the mattress works.
