How a sleeper sofa works, and what to check

Four things decide whether a sleeper earns its place: the mechanism, the mattress hidden inside, the size the frame allows, and the room it needs when open.

The mechanism

A bi-fold steel frame folded under the seat cushions.Closed, it is a normal sofa with loose seat cushions on top. Lift the cushions, pull the handle and the frame unfolds in two moves; the legs drop to the floor and the mattress comes with it. Our in-stock Ashley sleepers use a bi-fold queen or full mechanism on a steel frame, so there is no slat bed to assemble and nothing to store.

The mattress inside

Ashley's in-stock sleepers include a memory-foam mattress in damask ticking; England's standard sleeper mattress is an innerspring with a cushion top, with a memory-foam or air upgrade on many frames. Lie on the open bed on the floor; the difference is obvious in a minute.

Size follows the sofa's width

The sofa's depth plus the length of the bed.A queen opens to roughly 90 inches from the wall the sofa sits against. Measure that, leave a path on at least one side, and check that a coffee table can move. In a den or office, a full sleeper often fits where a queen will not.

We deliver throughout South Jersey: Atlantic City, Ocean City, Cape May, Somers Point, Linwood, Margate, Ventnor, Galloway, Mays Landing and the Shore towns between. In-stock pieces are available for pickup or fast delivery.

Delivery is white-glove: our crew brings the piece in, sets it up in the room and takes the packaging away. Removal of old furniture or a mattress is available for a charge and has to be arranged when you schedule the delivery.

What is the difference between a sleeper sofa, a futon and a daybed?

A sleeper sofa is a full-depth sofa with a folding mattress and frame hidden under the seat cushions; closed, nothing gives it away. A futon folds its own seat flat and is thinner and firmer to sleep on. A daybed is a twin bed with three sides, always a bed, sometimes with a trundle. For a living room that must look like a living room, the sleeper wins; for a dedicated guest room, a daybed can be the better buy.

What mattress sizes do sleeper sofas come in?

Twin, full and queen, and the sofa's width decides it. Loveseat-size frames around 50 to 59 inches hold a twin, sofas around 70 to 78 inches hold a full, and full-size sofas from about 79 to 91 inches hold a queen. Jonathan Louis also makes chairbeds, a chair-and-a-half that opens to a single bed. The product page lists the mattress size for every model.

How does the pull-out mechanism work?

Lift the loose seat cushions off, find the strap or handle at the front of the frame, and pull up and out. The steel frame unfolds in two folds, the legs drop and the mattress comes with it. Closing is the reverse. A bi-fold mechanism, which our Ashley sleepers use, needs no slats or assembly, and the cushions go back on top of the closed frame.

Are sleeper sofa mattresses comfortable?

Better than they were. A sleeper mattress is thinner than a bedroom mattress because it folds, so the kind of mattress matters: Ashley's in-stock sleepers include a memory-foam mattress in damask ticking, and England's standard innerspring can be upgraded to memory foam or air on many frames. Open the one you like on the floor and lie down; that is the only honest test.

How much room does a sleeper sofa need when it is open?

Can two adults sleep on a queen sleeper sofa?

Yes; that is what the queen is for. Sleeper mattresses are queen width but can be a little shorter than a bedroom queen, so a very tall guest is happier on a queen than a full. Do you have sleeper sectionals?

Yes. A sleeper sectional puts the pull-out under the sofa section of a chaise or L-shaped sectional, so the chaise stays and the bed opens beside it. They are in their own collection, linked above, and open the same way.

How heavy is a sleeper sofa, and will it go through my door?

The steel mechanism adds weight; most of the sleepers here weigh roughly 175 to 200 pounds. They move like any sofa of the same width, and our delivery crew brings the piece in and sets it up in the room. If a stairway or doorway worries you, give the consultant the measurements and we will check the piece's dimensions before it is scheduled.

Can I replace the mattress in a sleeper sofa later?

Usually yes, with a replacement sleeper mattress in the same size. Sleeper mattresses are thinner than bed mattresses so they can fold, so use one made for sleepers. Ask a consultant for the size the mechanism takes.
