Sizes, safety and what lasts

Twin or full?

Twin 38 by 75 in; full 54 by 75.A twin fits a small room and a young child; a full carries a child into the teen years and works as a guest bed later. If the room can take the extra 16 inches of width, buy the full once instead of the twin twice.

Bunk and loft beds

Two beds in one footprint, or a bed over a desk.Bunks need about 36 inches of clearance above the top rail to the ceiling and a top-bunk sleeper old enough to climb safely; makers recommend six and up. Lofts free the floor for a desk or play space. Both come apart into two standard beds later.

Headboard-only

The budget answer.A twin or full headboard on a metal frame you already have changes the room for the least money and moves to the next bed size when the child grows.

Storage that opens without a crash

Chests, nightstands, under-bed drawers.Look for chests with anchor kits and drawer stops, and anchor every tall piece to the wall; the kit is in the box. Under-bed storage drawers on a storage bed take the place of a chest in a small room.

Kids' bedroom questions, answered

What size bed should a child have?
A twin (38 by 75 inches) fits a small room and a young child. A full (54 by 75) lasts through the teen years and doubles as a guest bed later. If the room allows the extra width, a full bought once usually beats a twin replaced later.
How old should a child be for a top bunk?
Bed makers and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommend age six and up for the top bunk, with guardrails on both sides and a ladder that attaches to the frame. Younger children take the bottom bunk.
How much ceiling height does a bunk bed need?
Plan on about 36 inches between the top mattress and the ceiling so the child can sit up. Most bunk beds stand 65 to 70 inches tall, so an 8-foot ceiling works; a sloped or 7-foot ceiling usually calls for a loft or a low bunk.
Do bunk beds come apart into two beds?
Most do. The bunk beds we carry separate into two twin beds (or a twin over full) with the parts included, so the bed follows the child into a room of their own.
Can I buy only a headboard for a kids' room?
Yes. Twin and full headboards are the largest part of our youth selection and attach to a standard metal frame, which we also sell. It is the least expensive way to give a child's room a look.
Do you deliver and assemble kids' furniture?
Yes, and to Somers Point, Linwood, Margate, Ventnor, Galloway, Mays Landing and the rest of the Shore. In-stock pieces are available for pickup or fast delivery. Delivery is white-glove: our crew brings the piece in, sets it up in the room and takes the packaging away. Removal of old furniture or a mattress is available for a charge and has to be arranged when you schedule the delivery.
Is kids' bedroom furniture in stock?
Most of it. The youth selection is Ashley, and most Ashley pieces are in our own warehouse for pickup or fast delivery. The product page shows stock; call 609-241-0807 to confirm before you drive over.
Do you sell mattresses for bunk beds?
Yes. Bunk beds take a low-profile twin mattress so the guardrail stays high enough; the mattress floor in the same building has them, and we will match the height to the bed you buy.
What financing is available?
Purchases of $999 or more qualify for up to 60 months with $0 down and 0% interest on the Kensington Synchrony HOME credit card, subject to credit approval. Prequalifying does not affect your credit score; the details are on the financing page.
