England Furniture builds every sofa, chair and recliner to order in New Tazewell, Tennessee, and says so on its own site; Bassett builds its custom upholstery in Virginia; La-Z-Boy assembles its recliners in US plants. What you get for it is not patriotism: it is a frame you can specify, a fabric library you choose from, a shorter wait than an ocean crossing, and a warranty from a company that is still there.

Four practical differences, and the honest limit of each.

1. You choose the cover, not a colour from a menu

England: hundreds of fabrics, grades C to GA sofa built to order in Tennessee is cut from the fabric you pick in the store, so the same frame can be a beach-house canvas or a library leather. The limit: it is made after you order, so it is not a same-week piece.

2. A frame with a name on it

Published construction, published warrantyEngland publishes its frame and spring construction and its warranty terms; Bassett does the same for its Virginia upholstery. When a maker is a two-hour flight away and still in business, a warranty claim is a phone call, not a search.

3. The wait is weeks, not a season

4. Solid wood, when it is

Read the label, not the badgeAmerican-made does not mean solid wood, and solid wood does not mean American-made. Hardwood frames in upholstery, kiln-dried, are the norm from the makers above; for case goods, ask what the tops and drawer boxes are made of. Our product pages list what the maker publishes and nothing else.

What we will not claim

We list a piece as made in America only when the manufacturer says so. Many good brands we carry build some lines in the United States and others abroad; where we do not know the origin of a specific piece, the product page says nothing rather than guessing. Ask, and a consultant will check the label on the model you choose.

Sit in the frame, choose the fabric with a consultant, confirm the configuration, and we place the order with the maker. We tell you the current lead time when you order and call when it is built. Delivery is white-glove: our crew sets it in the room and takes the packaging away.

Delivery, warranty and the floor

Delivery and pickup

We deliver throughout South Jersey: Atlantic City, Ocean City, Cape May, Somers Point, Linwood, Margate, Ventnor, Galloway, Mays Landing and the Shore towns between. In-stock pieces are available for pickup or fast delivery.

Delivery is white-glove: our crew brings the piece in, sets it up in the room and takes the packaging away. Removal of old furniture or a mattress is available for a charge and has to be arranged when you schedule the delivery.

Warranties, as the makers publish them

England, Bassett and La-Z-Boy each publish a limited warranty for the original purchaser; the terms differ by part (frame, mechanism, cushions, fabric) and are linked from the product pages. Is American-made furniture better quality?
Not automatically, but the makers above publish their frame, spring and warranty details and stand behind them from a plant you can find on a map, and a custom order lets you specify the fabric and configuration. Judge each piece on its construction, which our product pages list where the maker publishes it.
What is the best wood for furniture?
For frames inside upholstery, kiln-dried hardwood or engineered hardwood; for tables and case goods, solid hardwoods such as oak, maple, cherry and walnut for tops, with well-made veneer over a stable core acceptable for large flat surfaces. Ask what the top and the drawer boxes are; that is where the difference shows.
Is solid wood always better than veneer?
No. Solid wood can be refinished and takes decades of use; a good veneer over a stable core resists warping on wide tops and costs less. Cheap veneer over particleboard is the thing to avoid. Read what the maker publishes and, when in doubt, lift the piece: weight tells.
How long does a custom England sofa take?
It is built after you order and comes by truck from Tennessee; England itself says most custom orders ship within 4 to 6 weeks. We confirm the current lead time for your piece when you order.
Can I choose my own fabric?
Yes. England offers a fabric library across price grades, chosen in store with a consultant, and Bassett offers custom covers and configurations. La-Z-Boy recliners can be ordered in your cover as well. The frame is on the floor; the cover is yours.
Is Canadel made in America?
Canadel is made in Canada, in Louiseville, Quebec, and is customizable in the same way; it has its own page. We do not describe it as American-made.
What does the Made in America Store include?
A section of our Northfield floor with England frames and the fabric library, Bassett custom upholstery and La-Z-Boy recliners set up to sit in, staffed by consultants who place the custom orders. It is one of the stores within our store.
