For our video series about the people behind the store, Dan sat down with his uncle Michael and asked the obvious question: what made you want to go into the family business? The answer is more honest than most. Michael's official line is that running Kensington was something he always dreamed about. The real story? He went to Boston University, had a good time, graduated without much of a plan, figured "I'll go in the family business" — and boom, that's what he did. Anyone who grew up around a family business knows it often starts exactly like that. What you stay for is a different story. For Michael, it's the legacy. Kensington is one of the oldest — if not the oldest — retail businesses in Atlantic County, at 113 years and counting. A run like that makes a store an intrinsic part of Atlantic and Cape May County history, whether it set out to be or not. But the number isn't really the point. The point is what people came in for. As Michael puts it, so many people in this community have marked their life events with something from Kensington — they got married, they had their first kid, they got their first place, and they came in and found something for it.
